A Leap Year Romance
Over Four Leap Years
Will he show?
Will she wait?
"We made a promise...
We meet every February 29
same time, same place... "
based on a novella by well-acclaimed writer, Dr Catherine Lim, the story talks about a young Singaporean girl having chance upon her special someone on 29th February. She decides to base her intuition on an Irish leap year tradition that no man will refuse any request of a lady and invites him out for a date. Together, they embark on a romantic journey that spans over 12 years, meeting only thrice in 12 years, on the leap year.
i just watched this movie today with celine. thai heartthrob – Ananda Everingham, last seen in Shutter (2004) co-starred in this romantic love story with Singapore girl next door - Li Lin. the cast and quality of the film wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. the story is romantic even though it might be unrealistic. good acting coupled with beautiful songs are like the icing on the cake. i will give it 4 out of 5 stars. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ;))
the acting of wong lee lin especially is commendable. she looks so natural in her role that it makes one wonder y she didnt make it big in mediacorp. what surprises me as well is the standard of english spoken by the cast! it is definitely much better than what i have expected!
the director did a great job at setting the audiences’ mind to keep them in line with the show. I like the way the calender tells the story too. This show really touches my heart! I teared when I saw Ananda returning every Feb 29; when Qi Yu Wu read the love letter Ananda wrote; when he proposed to Li Lin & when I saw the old him awoken towards the end of the show.
i have lived through at least 5 leap years but i never know that a beautiful legend about this special day exists until i watched this film. It is believed this tradition was started in 5th century Ireland when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about women having to wait for so long for a man to propose. according to legend, St. Patrick said the yearning females could propose on this ONE day in February during the leap year. any man who declined a proposal in a leap year must pay a fine which could range from a kiss to payment for a silk dress or a pair of gloves.
well u might be thinking in many of today's cultures, it is okay for a woman to propose marriage to a man and not be looked down by the society. however, that hasn't always been the case in the past when the rules of courtship were stricter. then, women were ONLY allowed to pop the question on ONE day EVERY FOUR YEARS and that day was February 29th.
below are some interesting and meaningful lines i picked up:
"A Saint once decreed that a man must agree to a woman's proposal today. Give me a sign, whether to meet me at eight, at the same place u sit and fulfil the tradition of February 29."
Its not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves - william shakesphere
It's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all - alfred tennyson
"Together, Apart"
"Never Say Never"
"Best friends stay as best friends, no confusion there"
"Coincidence is just god's way of remaining anonymous"
"The most mentioned word in love letters is not 'love' but 'miss'!"
"You dont need anyone's approval to love someone. So why bother about what other people think?"
nice huh? i think theres more but lol my short term memory has got the better of me once again. tag me if u happen to know any that i missed out :) one thing is for sure though. fairytales like these are meant to be fiction for a reason. they only exists in movies and storybooks! thats the SADDEST TRUTH
so PLEASE PLEASE go and watch it. do support our own local production! it cant get any better than this. i bet u wouldnt regret :)
